New help to find a mortgage abroad

The Association of Mortgage Intermediaries (AMI) has launched a factsheet with information for mortgage lenders to assist customers hoping find a mortgage outside the UK.

Entitled Advising Clients Thinking of Buying Abroad, the mortgage factsheet outlines some of the issues mortgage lenders should be aware of when helping their clients to find a mortgage .

Mortgage-related issues include currency risk for clients trying to find a mortgage outside the Sterling area, risk areas and key factors to be taken into account when buying or taking out a mortgage abroad, and any potential legal issues in the country itself.

Rob Griffiths, associate director of the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries, states that an increasing number of UK residents are looking to find a mortgage abroad, for holiday homes, retirement homes or buy-to-let opportunities.

There are many considerations for mortgage intermediaries when advising their clients on such a purchase and they must take great care to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible, said Mr Griffiths.

In different countries there are different laws regarding property and mortgages, and there will be differences in practices, customs and local regulations.

The Association of Mortgage Intermediaries has over 17,000 mortgage professionals as members and over 30 mortgage lenders have taken associate membership since it started in 2003.
