A large number of people believe first-time buyers struggling to find a mortgage, according to new research.

Some 88 per cent of Britons regard getting a foot on the property ladder as either very difficult or more difficult than ever before, a YouGov study released by the Council of Mortgage Lenders has revealed.

Additionally, 78 per cent of those polled believe that more should be done in order to assist first-time buyers in their attempts to find a mortgage .

Bob Pannell, head of research for the Council of Mortgage Lenders, commented: These results confirm that first-time buyer affordability is a major concern to people, whatever their own personal situation.

While lenders have a continuing part to play in helping borrowers most people believe that government needs to do more.

Milan Khatri, chief economist at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors , recently warned that first-time buyers will not find it any easier to find a mortgage in 2007 despite the Bank of England's base rate rise.
